Garmin introduces Varia RearVue 820 to sharpen multi‑lane awareness
Radar tail light aims to boost cyclist safety
Garmin announces the Varia RearVue 820, a radar tail light the company says brings more powerful, precise vehicle detection together with its brightest tail light to improve cyclist awareness and visibility. The unit detects vehicle size (small, medium, large), tracks side‑to‑side movement and assigns threat levels based on a vehicle’s speed and path of travel, delivering visual and audible alerts to compatible Edge cycling computers or the Varia smartphone app. It also increases the field of view to detect movement several lanes away, a feature Garmin highlights for busy urban roads and multi‑lane cycling routes.
The RearVue 820 doubles as a brake light when riders slow or stop and is designed to extend ride safety on longer outings. Battery endurance runs up to 24 hours in day flash mode and up to 30 hours in radar‑only mode, enabling longer commutes and training sessions without frequent recharging. Garmin says the improved radar precision reduces false alerts and helps commuters and road‑training cyclists better anticipate lane changes and passing behaviour.
Garmin positions the device as part of a broader push to provide riders with real‑time context about approaching traffic, combining lighting and sensor data to give earlier, clearer warnings. Susan Lyman, Garmin’s vice president of consumer sales and marketing, says the combination of enhanced radar tracking, brighter lighting and extended battery life provides greater peace of mind to cyclists sharing the road with motorists and other riders.
Connectivity and integration
The Varia RearVue 820 pairs wirelessly with existing Garmin Edge units and smartphones running the Varia app, sending both visual icons and audible warnings that display threat level and vehicle size on a rider’s device. Mounting options include seatpost or rack installation, allowing integration with common commuter and road setups.
Availability and market positioning
Garmin plans to ship the RearVue 820 to retailers, online channels and direct customers in the months ahead as part of its global safety product line. The company frames the product toward urban commuters and cyclists who train on busy roads, emphasising multi‑lane detection as a distinguishing feature in the cycling safety market.
