GE HealthCare Expands Manufacturing Capacity to Meet Rising Demand for Contrast Media

GE HealthCare Technologies announces a substantial investment of $138 million to enhance its contrast media manufacturing capabilities at its Carrigtohill facility in Cork, Ireland. This expansion is set to increase production capacity by an additional 25 million patient doses of injectable diagnostic imaging agents annually. The new facility, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2027, comes in response to a predicted doubling of global demand for iodine-based contrast media over the next decade. This surge is primarily driven by the aging global population and the increasing prevalence of chronic health conditions, making the ability to visualize internal organs and tissues more critical than ever.

The new 3,000 square meter facility will incorporate advanced production technologies, including automated solution preparation vessels and a new filling line. These enhancements are designed to improve production flexibility and ensure the security of supply for medical imaging agents, which are essential for procedures such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, and interventional imaging. Kevin O’Neill, President and CEO of GE HealthCare’s Pharmaceutical Diagnostics segment, emphasizes the company’s commitment to meeting the escalating demand while maintaining supply chain resilience. This strategic expansion not only bolsters production capabilities but also positions GE HealthCare as a pivotal player in the global healthcare landscape.

Eugene Barrett, Site Leader for GE HealthCare Ireland, highlights the significance of the Carrigtohill site, which has been an integral part of the local workforce and economy for over three decades. The investment has received positive feedback from local leaders, including An Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Michael Lohan from IDA Ireland, who recognize GE HealthCare's longstanding contributions to Ireland’s pharmaceutical sector. This expansion exemplifies GE HealthCare’s dedication to leveraging Cork’s skilled labor market and enhancing its global distribution network to better serve patient needs worldwide.

In addition to the Carrigtohill facility, GE HealthCare operates other production sites in Shanghai and Oslo, collectively expected to supply over 100 million doses of contrast media globally by 2024. This coordinated approach underscores the company's strategy of building a robust and responsive manufacturing footprint that can adapt to market demands and ensure timely delivery of essential medical products. The investment reinforces GE HealthCare's position as a leader in the medical imaging industry, committed to advancing healthcare through innovation and operational excellence.
