Halozyme Therapeutics Expands Drug Delivery Capabilities Through Strategic Collaborations

Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. announces a significant global collaboration with Merus N.V. aimed at enhancing cancer treatment delivery through its innovative ENHANZE® drug delivery technology. This partnership centers on the subcutaneous administration of petosemtamab, a bispecific antibody that targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and LGR5, which has shown promising efficacy in clinical trials for various solid tumors, particularly head and neck cancer. The collaboration represents a pivotal moment in Halozyme's mission to improve patient outcomes by leveraging its proprietary enzyme, rHuPH20, within the ENHANZE® platform to facilitate more effective drug delivery solutions.

The agreement stipulates that Merus will provide an upfront payment to Halozyme, along with potential milestone payments linked to the commercial success of petosemtamab. Halozyme will also receive royalties on net sales of the drug when delivered using the ENHANZE® technology. Dr. Helen Torley, President and CEO of Halozyme, underscores the importance of this partnership, emphasizing its potential to transform treatment paradigms and enhance the patient experience by enabling less invasive administration options. As a leader in subcutaneous delivery solutions, Halozyme continues to pursue collaborations that expand the reach and applicability of its technologies, ultimately accelerating the availability of innovative therapies to both patients and healthcare providers.

In addition to its collaboration with Merus, Halozyme successfully completes its acquisition of Elektrofi, Inc., known for its proprietary Hypercon™ ultra-high concentration microparticle formulation technology. This acquisition, valued at an upfront payment of $750 million and additional potential payments, is expected to bolster Halozyme's drug delivery offerings significantly. The Hypercon™ technology allows biologic products to achieve concentrations of 400-500 mg/ml, thereby reducing injection volume and facilitating easier administration through small-volume auto-injectors. Dr. Torley highlights that this acquisition aligns with Halozyme’s goal of revolutionizing how essential medicines are delivered, ensuring a seamless integration into patients' lives.

Moving forward, Halozyme plans to advance two programs from Elektrofi into clinical development by the end of 2026, aiming to fully unlock the potential of the Hypercon platform. Expected royalty revenues from this partnership may begin as early as 2030, marking an important step in Halozyme's commitment to developing innovative drug delivery solutions that promise long-term value and enhanced patient care. This strategic focus not only strengthens Halozyme's market position but also reinforces its dedication to improving treatment accessibility and efficacy in the biopharmaceutical landscape.
