International Paper Refines Focus on Sustainable Packaging with Strategic Changes
International Paper, a leading entity in sustainable packaging, announces crucial operational shifts aimed at strengthening its North American market presence. Based in Memphis, Tennessee, the company reveals plans to exit the molded fiber business, signaling a decisive pivot towards more profitable segments in its packaging operations. The Reno, Nevada facility will undergo repurposing to focus exclusively on packaging, while the Marion, Ohio plant will be closed, and the recycling site in Wichita, Kansas will also be shut down. These moves reflect International Paper's commitment to optimizing its operations and enhancing its product offerings in a competitive landscape.
The restructuring includes significant changes in Mexico, where International Paper intends to divest its containerboard mill and recycling plants in Xalapa and Apodaca to Acabados de Papeles Santinados y Absorbentes (APSA). This transition is noteworthy as APSA plans to keep the existing workforce at these locations, which helps to mitigate potential job losses amid the restructuring. International Paper's executive vice president, Tom Hamic, acknowledges the challenges posed by these decisions but underscores their necessity in streamlining operations to prioritize key geographies, customers, and products that align with the company's vision for sustainable growth.
These strategic adjustments come in the wake of International Paper's reported net sales of $18.6 billion in 2024, reflecting a robust performance within the sector. By focusing on enhancing the quality, reliability, and service delivery of its packaging solutions, International Paper positions itself as a leader in sustainable packaging. The company's recent acquisition of DS Smith further solidifies its commitment to innovation and sustainability, paving the way for a more agile and competitive operational framework. With over 65,000 employees across more than 30 countries, International Paper continues to emphasize its mission of delivering effective packaging solutions worldwide.
In light of these developments, International Paper is actively working to support the approximately 110 hourly and 24 salaried employees affected by the operational changes. The company aims to facilitate job placements, provide retirement options, and offer severance support to ensure a smoother transition for its workforce. As the industry evolves, International Paper’s strategic focus on sustainability and operational efficiency positions it well to meet the growing demands for eco-friendly packaging solutions.
