International Paper and PALM Group: A Strategic Divestment in Europe
International Paper (IP) is currently in exclusive negotiations with Germany's PALM Group for the sale of five corrugated box plants in Europe, marking a significant strategic move for the company. The plants involved in the transaction are located in Normandy, France (Saint-Amand, Mortagne, and Cabourg), as well as one each in Ovar, Portugal, and Bilbao, Spain. This divestment follows an irrevocable offer and is part of the conditions imposed by the European Commission regarding International Paper’s recent acquisition of DS Smith. The completion of this sale is contingent upon consultations with the French works council and is anticipated to close by the end of the second quarter of 2025.
Andy Silvernail, Chairman and CEO of International Paper, underscores the importance of securing a suitable buyer for these facilities, reflecting the company's commitment to employee appreciation and operational integrity. The sale represents not just a compliance measure with regulatory obligations but also a strategic realignment for International Paper as it seeks to concentrate its efforts on the North American and EMEA markets. By divesting these European assets, International Paper can streamline its operations and enhance its focus on sectors where it can drive sustainable practices and innovation in packaging solutions.
The plants being sold contribute to PALM Group’s existing operations, which include five paper mills and 29 box plants across Europe. The family-owned company, based in Aalen, Germany, is a notable player in the containerboard and corrugated packaging sector, generating €2 billion in turnover. This acquisition will likely bolster PALM Group’s market position and further diversify International Paper’s portfolio, allowing it to concentrate resources on core markets and sustainable product offerings. The transaction promises to reinforce both companies' commitments to operational excellence and sustainable packaging solutions.
In addition to this significant divestment, International Paper continues to emphasize its leadership in sustainable packaging. The company employs over 65,000 individuals globally and reported net sales of $18.6 billion in 2024, highlighting its expansive reach and influence in the industry. As the landscape of the packaging sector evolves, these strategic decisions will enable International Paper to leverage its strengths and drive future growth in a competitive marketplace.
Overall, the negotiations with PALM Group signify a pivotal moment for International Paper, aligning with its broader strategy to enhance operational focus and commitment to sustainability in packaging solutions.
