NEXTCHEM Partners with Eni and Iren Ambiente for Sustainable Energy Solutions

NEXTCHEM, a technology division of MAIRE, is spearheading a significant development in the circular economy by collaborating with Eni and Iren Ambiente to establish a circular methanol and hydrogen production facility at Eni's Sannazzaro de' Burgondi refinery in Italy. This innovative plant will utilize NEXTCHEM's proprietary NX Circular™ waste-to-energy gasification technology. Once operational, it has the capacity to convert approximately 200,000 tons of non-recyclable waste into synthesis gas per year, facilitating the production of up to 110,000 tons of circular methanol and 1,500 tons of circular hydrogen annually.

The circular methanol produced at this facility is particularly noteworthy as it serves as a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, specifically targeting the decarbonization of the maritime sector. This aligns with the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive for Recycled Carbon Fuels (RCF), ensuring that the methanol adheres to stringent environmental standards. Additionally, the plant will recover 33,000 tons of inert granulate yearly for use in the cement industry, thereby supporting broader decarbonization efforts. Fabio Fritelli, Managing Director of NEXTCHEM, underscores the potential of this project to fuse environmental sustainability with economic growth, positioning Italian ports to utilize eco-friendly fuels that comply with international regulations.
