Strengthening Jaguar Conservation Efforts in Mexico

At the recently concluded 2025 Tech4Nature Summit in Merida, Mexico, an important initiative to enhance jaguar protection is officially launched. Phase Two of the Tech4Nature Mexico project, a collaboration between Huawei and the International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN), aims to address the pressing threats faced by the jaguar population in the Dzilam de Bravo State Reserve. With the support of Mexico's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the State Government of Yucatán, and local partner C-Minds, this initiative not only aligns with Huawei's TECH4ALL program but also integrates with IUCN's Green List, emphasizing the need for urgent conservation action.

The urgency of this project is underscored by Dr. Marina Robles García, the Undersecretary of Biodiversity and Environmental Restoration, who notes that over 42% of Mexico's ecosystems are degraded. Launched in 2020, the first phase of the project successfully deployed 60 audio devices and more than 20 camera traps, utilizing advanced AI models to identify species through vocalizations and imagery.
