- Their collaboration emphasizes automation and efficiency, redefining aerial mission strategies for modern military operations.
Lockheed Martin and XTEND Revolutionize Drone Command with Integrated Systems
Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works® has forged a significant partnership with XTEND to enhance the capabilities of the MDCX™ autonomy platform. This collaboration focuses on integrating the XTEND Operating System (XOS) into the Command and Control (C2) systems for multi-class drones, marking a critical advancement in how military operations can be conducted across various domains. By improving situational awareness and streamlining operational processes within joint all-domain C2 (JADC2) environments, this integration represents a transformative step in drone technology and military strategy.
In a demonstration set for November 2025, the two companies exhibit a Multi-Class MDCX (MC-MDCX) workstation, showcasing a larger unmanned aerial system (UAS) successfully deploying a smaller Class 1 drone for close-in missions. Previously, the operation of these drones required multiple personnel, as control would transition from the operator of the larger UAS to a lower-tier operator for the smaller drone. The new system allows a single operator to manage both drones simultaneously, significantly reducing manpower requirements while enhancing situational awareness during missions. This streamlined approach not only improves operational efficiency but also emphasizes the potential for more agile and responsive military operations.
XTEND brings its combat-proven drone command solutions, renowned for their resilience in environments where GPS signals might be compromised. The XOS platform is designed to empower novice operators to execute complex missions with near-expert proficiency, thereby reducing training periods and improving operational effectiveness. Lockheed Martin's commitment to optimizing the interaction between piloted and drone operations aims to expedite decision-making processes and bolster pilot safety. As the partnership evolves, both companies are poised to explore further applications of these innovations in JADC2 missions, signaling a future where autonomous systems play a pivotal role in military strategy and operations.
In addition to these advancements, Lockheed Martin's focus on enhancing the synergy between traditional piloted operations and unmanned systems indicates a broader trend in military technology toward automation and efficiency. The collaboration with XTEND showcases a commitment to not just keeping pace with technological advancements, but also to leading the charge in redefining aerial mission strategies for the modern battlefield.
