Kentucky American Water Initiates Infrastructure Upgrade to Enhance Water Reliability
Kentucky American Water undertakes a significant investment of approximately $630,000 to modernize crucial water infrastructure along Leawood Drive in Lexington. The project entails replacing a deteriorating 6-inch water main, originally installed in the 1960s, with a more robust 8-inch ductile iron main. This upgrade aims to bolster the reliability and quality of water supply, along with enhancing fire protection services for its customers. As a subsidiary of American Water Works Co., Kentucky American Water is committed to improving its infrastructure to support the needs of about 527,000 customers in the region.
The decision to replace the aging water main is part of Kentucky American Water’s broader initiative focused on upgrading essential water infrastructure. By modernizing the systems that deliver water to homes and businesses, the company seeks to minimize service interruptions and promote improved water flow throughout the community. The project is designed to enhance overall operational efficiency and ensure that customers receive safe, reliable water services. Construction has already commenced, with local contractor Lagco, Inc. managing the work and collaborating with authorities to ensure a smooth execution while maintaining public safety.
Construction crews are scheduled to work from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., preserving access to homes and businesses during the process. Motorists are advised to exercise caution in work zones, and measures are in place to ensure that emergency vehicle access remains uncompromised at all times. While temporary surface restoration is implemented during excavation, permanent restoration will occur later to allow for soil settling and favorable weather conditions. This project reinforces Kentucky American Water’s dedication to maintaining high-quality water standards and reliable service across its network.
In related news, Pennsylvania American Water has unveiled the 2026 Water and Environment Grant Program through the American Water Charitable Foundation. This program is intended to assist community partners in obtaining funding for various initiatives aimed at promoting clean water, environmental conservation, and education. The previous year’s grant program was notably successful, disbursing $1.7 million to 80 organizations, including $205,000 across 19 initiatives in Pennsylvania alone.
These grants represent a commitment to empower communities to enhance local ecosystems and education surrounding water conservation. By fostering engagement and support for sustainable practices, the American Water Charitable Foundation continues to play a pivotal role in protecting vital water resources, underscoring the company's dedication to environmental stewardship and community involvement.
