Lucid Group Prepares for Gravity SUV Launch to Drive Sales Growth
Lucid Group, the electric vehicle (EV) startup, is gearing up for a significant milestone with the impending launch of its Gravity SUV. CEO Peter Rawlinson expresses optimism that the Gravity will play a pivotal role in boosting sales and reducing the company's losses. The Gravity, which follows the Air sedan, is set to have customer orders open on November 7. The Grand Touring model will be priced at $94,900, while an entry-level Gravity Touring trim is anticipated for a late next year launch at $79,900. This strategy reflects Lucid's intention to tap into the increasing consumer preference for SUVs, a segment that Rawlinson believes can provide a sales multiplier of approximately six times compared to sedans.
The company's performance in 2023 showcases its potential as it surpasses its delivery target for the Air sedan, achieving 7,142 deliveries against a goal of around 6,000. This achievement sets a positive precedent for the anticipated demand for the Gravity. Lucid, supported by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, expects initial demand for the new SUV to exceed its production capabilities as it scales operations at its Arizona facility. While serial production is slated to commence by year-end, specific delivery timelines remain undisclosed. The Grand Touring model promises impressive specifications, boasting over 800 horsepower and an electric range that exceeds 440 miles.
Despite the excitement surrounding the Gravity, Lucid's shares face challenges due to a broader slowdown in the EV market, with stock values declining approximately 40% this year. The upcoming third-quarter results, coinciding with the Gravity's order opening, will be crucial in assessing the company's financial health and production capabilities. Lucid is also finalizing federal crash tests and awaits evaluations from both the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, essential steps before the Gravity can hit the market. As the company navigates these challenges, the successful launch of the Gravity SUV could be a transformative moment for Lucid Group, positioning it favorably within the competitive EV landscape.
