Significant Infrastructure Upgrades by Maryland American Water Set to Enhance Service Quality
Maryland American Water receives approval from the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) for a new water rate settlement that will lead to an annual revenue increase of approximately $2 million. This marks the company's first rate adjustment since 2019, reflecting a critical step in financing comprehensive infrastructure enhancements. The rate request, filed on August 1, 2025, is aimed at funding around $22 million in capital improvements to the company’s treatment systems and distribution networks. Laura Runkle, the President of Maryland American Water, emphasizes the necessity of these investments to maintain a high standard of service, ensuring compliance with both state and federal regulations for its 24,000 customers.
The newly approved rates will take effect on February 26, 2026, resulting in an approximate monthly increase of $10 for residential customers in Bel Air who consume around 4,000 gallons of water. This incremental rise is part of an ongoing effort to ensure the reliability and quality of water services provided to residents. In an effort to further assist customers, the company also plans additional adjustments, with an expected second increase of $10 beginning January 1, 2027. Customers located in the Severn District will transition to a flat fee structure, experiencing a monthly increase of approximately $1.50 starting on the same date. These structured rate increases will enable Maryland American Water to continue improving its infrastructure without compromising service quality.
Moreover, Maryland American Water places a critical emphasis on customer assistance programs. Initiatives such as bill payment assistance and the H2O Help to Others program, in collaboration with Dollar Energy Fund, aim to support income-eligible customers. As these new rates come into effect, the company commits to keeping its customers informed through future billing statements and detailed information on its website about the adjusted rates and available assistance programs. By investing in its infrastructure and enhancing customer support, Maryland American Water hopes to provide safe, reliable water services while addressing the needs of its community.
In a related development, California American Water is also undertaking significant infrastructure enhancements with the initiation of the Austin Steiner Main Replacement Project in Sacramento. This project is crucial for modernizing the Fruitridge Vista water system, replacing outdated water mains with new street-installed infrastructure. Such upgrades promise to improve service reliability and ensure a safe water supply for residents while aligning with statewide water-efficiency goals.
Across the nation, American Water Works Co. showcases its commitment to investing in essential water infrastructure, reflecting a strategic focus on enhancing service quality and community support in its operational regions.
