Elevating European Cheeses in the U.S. Market: InLac’s Strategic Campaign
The Interprofessional Dairy Organization (InLac) is currently spearheading a promotional initiative titled "Discover the European Cheestories with cheeses from Spain," with a focus on enhancing the visibility of European cheeses in the United States. Supported by the European Union, this campaign strategically aligns with key food fairs, notably the 'Good Food Mercantile' and 'Summer Fancy Food' events held in New York. Nuria M. Arribas, managing director of InLac, emphasizes that these events serve as critical platforms for showcasing the authenticity and sustainability of Spanish cheeses, which are gaining traction among American consumers.
At the 'Good Food Mercantile,' which took place on June 28, attendees explore the rich flavors of various cheeses such as PDO Arzúa-Ulloa, PDO Manchego, and PDO Mahón-Menorca. Certified cheese professional Erin T. Connolly guides visitors through tastings, highlighting the unique qualities of these cheeses. This event specifically caters to a discerning audience interested in sustainable and artisanal foods, making it an ideal venue for promoting European products. Arribas articulates that participation in these fairs is crucial for building a stronger market presence for European cheeses in the U.S., which serves as the largest export market for these products outside of the EU.
Following the success of the 'Good Food Mercantile,' the 'Summer Fancy Food' fair runs from June 29 to July 1, attracting over 7,700 potential buyers. This event further underscores the campaign's objective of presenting the versatility and high quality of Spanish cheeses. InLac's outreach strategy spans from March 2023 to February 2026 and includes various activities across major U.S. cities such as New York, Las Vegas, and Chicago. The campaign aims to solidify the position of Spanish cheeses in the American market, where they already represent a significant share of exports, accounting for 14.45% of total value and nearly 8% of total volume.
In 2024, the export figures for European cheeses of Spanish origin indicate a promising upward trend, with a volume increase of 6.95% to 125,206 tonnes and a value increase of 4.57% to 839.42 million euros. These statistics reinforce the importance of InLac's campaign in fostering international trade relationships, particularly as the United States emerges as the third-largest foreign market for Spanish cheeses.
As Mercantile Bank continues to support the agricultural sector, particularly in dairy and food products, the advancements made by InLac present opportunities for collaboration and investment in the burgeoning market for European cheeses. Emphasizing sustainable practices and authentic products aligns with the bank's commitment to fostering economic growth in sectors that prioritize quality and sustainability.
