Mercer Mass Timber Leads Sustainable Construction in Walmart's New Home Office
Mercer Mass Timber (MMT), a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., takes a significant step forward in sustainable construction by supplying mass timber for Walmart's new Home Office in Bentonville, Arkansas. This project marks the largest mass timber corporate campus in the United States and reflects both MMT’s and Walmart’s commitment to sustainability. The installation of mass timber panels, which commenced in Spring 2024, has recently concluded, paving the way for a modern workspace that integrates nature into the corporate environment. MMT's selection by Shawmut Design and Construction and Layton Construction underscores the growing trend of using cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (Glulam) in large-scale commercial projects.
The campus will consist of two main zones, with Zone 1 featuring four hybrid mass timber buildings and Zone 3 housing a five-story structure entirely framed with mass timber. The total footprint of these buildings reaches over 1.2 million square feet. MMT has supplied 21,000 cubic meters of CLT and Glulam from its facility in Conway, Arkansas, a move that not only fulfills project specifications but also generates local employment for 58 individuals. MMT’s involvement highlights its commitment to the local economy while also enabling Walmart to enhance its sustainability profile through the use of eco-friendly materials.
The environmental benefits of MMT's products are substantial, offering a reduction in carbon emissions by 25-40% compared to traditional construction materials. The prefabrication of these materials also allows for faster installation times, minimizing disruptions on-site. Furthermore, the enhanced fire resistance of mass timber contributes to the overall safety and durability of the structures. Beyond material supply, MMT plays a proactive role in the project by providing design-assist services, from feasibility analysis to on-site support, demonstrating its expertise in mass timber construction. MMT's leadership views this contract as a pivotal milestone in the mass timber industry, with aspirations for future projects that will further showcase the benefits of bio-based materials in creating sustainable, innovative building practices.
In addition to supporting Walmart’s sustainability goals, MMT's engagement in this project reflects a broader shift in the construction industry towards greener alternatives. As the demand for sustainable building solutions increases, MMT positions itself at the forefront of this movement, advocating for the use of mass timber to create environmentally responsible communities. The partnership with Walmart not only emphasizes the importance of sustainable materials but also sets a precedent for future commercial developments across the country.
