Mercer Mass Timber Leads Sustainable Construction for Walmart's New Home Office
Mercer Mass Timber (MMT), a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., is at the forefront of sustainable construction as it completes its role in Walmart's new Home Office in Bentonville, Arkansas. This ambitious project, set to be the largest mass timber corporate campus in the United States, exemplifies the shift toward eco-friendly building materials in the commercial sector. The installation of mass timber panels, which began in Spring 2024, has now reached completion, marking a significant milestone in both MMT's operations and Walmart's sustainability initiatives.
Selected by Shawmut Design and Construction alongside Layton Construction, MMT supplies cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (Glulam) for the project’s two major sections, which are slated to open between late 2025 and early 2026. Zone 1 features four hybrid mass timber buildings, each four stories high, amounting to a total of 897,500 square feet, complemented by parking decks. Zone 3 consists of a five-story building constructed entirely with mass timber frames, covering 332,615 square feet. This innovative approach not only enhances the aesthetic value of the workspace but also aligns with Walmart's commitment to sustainability by fostering a nature-connected environment.
In addition to providing materials, MMT plays an integral role in the project through design-assist services, which include feasibility analysis and on-site support. The company supplies 21,000 cubic meters of CLT and Glulam sourced from its Conway, Arkansas facility, creating jobs for 58 local employees and demonstrating a strong commitment to the local economy. MMT's leadership views this contract as a pivotal step in establishing mass timber as a viable option for large-scale construction, with ambitions to pursue future projects that highlight the benefits of sustainable building practices. With the environmental advantages of mass timber—including 25-40% lower carbon emissions compared to traditional materials and enhanced fire resistance—MMT is poised to redefine the landscape of sustainable construction.
The collaboration with Walmart not only underscores the growing trend towards eco-conscious architecture but also positions MMT as a leader in the mass timber industry. The project serves as a model for other corporations looking to enhance their sustainability practices while investing in local economies. As MMT continues to innovate with bio-based materials, it remains dedicated to fostering greener communities and advancing the principles of sustainable building across the sector.
Moving forward, MMT is not just focused on fulfilling current contracts but is also exploring new opportunities to showcase the potential of mass timber in commercial construction. The successful completion of Walmart's Home Office is set to pave the way for more projects that prioritize environmental responsibility, indicating a promising future for both Mercer International and the broader construction industry.
