Revolutionizing Sustainable Construction: Mercer Mass Timber's Role in Walmart's New Home Office

Mercer Mass Timber (MMT), a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., is at the forefront of sustainable construction with its significant involvement in Walmart's new Home Office in Bentonville, Arkansas. This ambitious project is set to become the largest mass timber corporate campus in the United States. The completion of mass timber panel installation marks a crucial milestone in the construction process, which commenced in Spring 2024. MMT's selection by Shawmut Design and Construction and Layton Construction underscores the growing demand for eco-friendly building materials and practices in the corporate sector.

The project consists of two major zones, with Zone 1 featuring four hybrid mass timber buildings, each four stories tall, and a total area of 897,500 square feet, alongside parking facilities. Zone 3 includes a five-story building constructed entirely of mass timber, encompassing 332,615 square feet. MMT's contribution includes the supply of 21,000 cubic meters of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (Glulam) sourced from its Conway, Arkansas facility. This initiative not only bolsters local employment, creating 58 jobs, but also reflects MMT's dedication to supporting the local economy while promoting sustainable practices.

The environmental benefits of MMT's timber products are substantial, with claims of 25-40% lower carbon emissions compared to traditional building materials. The prefabrication of these materials facilitates quicker assembly on site, while their inherent fire-resistant properties enhance safety.
