Momentus Secures Air Force Partnership for Innovative RPO Demonstration

Momentus Inc., a U.S. commercial space company, announces a significant milestone in its pursuit of advancing in-space operational capabilities. Selected by the U.S. Air Force Research Labs' AFWERX organization for a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project, Momentus will conduct an in-space demonstration flight of a novel suite of low-cost multispectral sensors. This project, which emerged from a competitive evaluation process following Momentus’s proposal submission in 2024, underscores the company's commitment to pioneering technologies that enhance rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) in space.

The upcoming demonstration, slated for early 2026, will utilize Momentus’s proprietary RPO system. This system incorporates advanced optical, infrared, and Lidar sensors designed to facilitate the safe guidance of a space vehicle toward uncharacterized client objects. The mission aims to leverage machine vision algorithms and data fusion techniques to effectively navigate and interact with these targets. The implications of this demonstration extend beyond immediate operational capabilities; it plays a crucial role in developing technologies essential for future in-space operations, including satellite refueling, manufacturing, and debris removal.

Alongside the RPO sensor demonstration, Momentus plans to accommodate various payloads for both the Department of Defense and commercial clients during an upcoming SpaceX Transporter rideshare launch. The company expresses its readiness to support government and commercial customers with microsatellite launches of up to 200 kg, as well as hosted payload missions and other low Earth orbit (LEO) services in early 2026.
