Celebrating Southern African Art: BE OPEN's Regional Art Initiative

In a vibrant celebration of cultural identity, BE OPEN Art, an online gallery founded by philanthropist Elena Baturina, announces the culmination of its 2024 Regional Art competition. This initiative spotlights emerging artists from southern African nations, including Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The competition aims to elevate artists whose work embodies their regional, cultural, and ethnic narratives, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diversity of Southern African art.

The competition spans over two years, during which a curated community of experts selects artists for monthly showcases. Public voting determines winners in various categories, and each regional winner receives a scholarship from the foundation. This year, the spotlight shines on Akissi Beukman, a Pretoria-based artist recognized for her innovative performance art and experimental sound pieces. Her work delves into themes of gender, ethnicity, and the socio-political landscape of South Africa, emphasizing spiritual healing through artistic expression. In November, Aislinn Finnegan, a mixed-media artist of mixed heritage, is awarded the title for her illustrations that celebrate Black culture while challenging Western beauty standards. The recognition of these artists reflects BE OPEN Art's commitment to amplifying marginalized voices and enhancing the visibility of their unique perspectives.

The initiative also features Natasha Mwila from Lusaka, Zambia, who captivates audiences with her digital collages that tackle pressing social and political issues. This diverse artistic community not only enriches the local cultural landscape but also contributes significantly to the global art dialogue. By fostering visibility and providing scholarships, BE OPEN Art plays a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of artists and ensuring that their stories and identities resonate far beyond their immediate surroundings.
