PLP and FulcrumAir Partner to Automate Overhead Power Line Installation
- PLP and FulcrumAir partner to co-develop robotic overhead power line installation systems.
- PLP is redesigning products for robotic installation, enabling automated deployment of CUSHION‑GRIP and BIRD‑FLIGHT hardware.
- PLP's prior LineSpider and LineFly collaborations provide a technical foundation for broader automation and reduced live-line exposure.
New robotics pact aims to reshape overhead line work
Preformed Line Products Company (PLP) and FulcrumAir announce a multi‑year strategic partnership to co‑develop robotic installation systems for overhead power line construction. The collaboration focuses on automating installation of PLP hardware to deliver faster project timelines, improved installation consistency and reduced lineworker exposure to hazardous environments. PLP President Ryan Ruhlman says the tie‑up reinforces the company’s commitment to providing “the world’s most advanced solutions built to the highest quality standards.”
Robotic deployment for faster, safer builds
The companies are concentrating development on systems that increase installation efficiency and shorten project schedules while delivering precision in hardware placement and quality control. PLP and FulcrumAir emphasize that robotic platforms can lower labor hours and project costs across municipal, regional and national deployments by standardising installation metrics and reducing rework. Patrick Arnell, FulcrumAir’s president and CEO, says robotics is “redefining power line construction” by elevating worker safety and expanding workforce capabilities through automation.
PLP is also reimagining product design to suit robotic installation, accelerating integration of its existing portfolio with FulcrumAir platforms. The programme aims to enable automated deployment of PLP products such as CUSHION‑GRIP Twin Spacers and BIRD‑FLIGHT Diverters, and to create new revenue opportunities tied to systemised, large‑scale deployments. The partners expect the initiative to support grid resilience by enabling faster, more reliable overhead line builds that utilities and regulators can measure with standardised timelines and safety metrics.
Prior collaboration provides technical foundation
PLP and FulcrumAir build on earlier joint work, including the LineSpider™ robot for installing CUSHION‑GRIP Twin Spacers and the LineFly™ family that installs PLP BIRD‑FLIGHT™ Diverters. Those precedents provide a technical and commercial foundation for broader automation, demonstrating how hardware and robotics co‑design can reduce human exposure on live lines.
Industry implications and adoption pathway
The announcement signals an industry push toward automated deployment of distribution and transmission hardware, with anticipated adoption across utility fleets worldwide. Utilities see potential for measurable safety improvements and cost reductions, while suppliers like PLP and FulcrumAir position themselves to lead a shift toward mechanised overhead line construction.
