Robotaxis move from pilot to production line in Guangzhou
Pony.ai and Toyota Motor China mark a major milestone on Feb. 9, 2026, as the first mass-produced bZ4X Robotaxi jointly developed with GAC Toyota rolls off the Guangzhou production line. The vehicle, produced collaboratively by Pony.ai and GAC Toyota, carries Pony.ai’s seventh-generation autonomous driving system and is built under processes that integrate the Toyota Production System (TPS) with dedicated management, quality control and safety systems. The partners say the effort embeds Toyota’s Quality, Durability and Reliability principles to support scaled, safe robotaxi operations and to demonstrate a pathway from limited validation to large-scale commercialization.
The Gen‑7 Robotaxi lineup, which includes the bZ4X and two other models already in commercial service since November, features a fully automotive‑grade core for autonomy and a 70% reduction in the autonomous‑driving kit bill of materials versus the prior generation. Pony.ai highlights rider-focused refinements — Bluetooth automatic unlocking, in‑cabin voice interaction, online music, pre‑trip climate control and smoother acceleration/braking to reduce motion sickness — as part of efforts to improve customer experience and operational efficiency. Production leverages GAC Toyota as one of Toyota’s global model plants and applies lessons from earlier validation programs to accelerate deployment while maintaining stringent safety and reliability standards for robotaxi operations.
The partners plan to produce more than 1,000 bZ4X Robotaxis in 2026 and expand Pony.ai’s total robotaxi fleet to over 3,000 vehicles by year-end, gradually introducing them into commercial services across China’s Tier 1 cities. The announcement underscores deep synergy across autonomous software, vehicle manufacturing and supply‑chain integration, and signals a push by Toyota and Pony.ai to move robotaxi technology from limited tests toward broader, city-scale mobility services in China.
Leadership change sharpens financial focus
Toyota is reshaping its top management as Kenta Kon, currently chief financial officer, is set to become president and chief executive on April 1, 2026. Koji Sato moves to vice chairman and chief industry officer to reduce his workload after taking the chairmanship of Japan’s main auto industry group; Yoichi Miyazaki is tapped to succeed Kon as CFO. Observers say the shift signals a stronger emphasis on profitability and capital allocation to fund electrification and future mobility.
Highlander debuts as Toyota’s first three‑row U.S. BEV
Toyota unveils the all‑new 2027 Highlander, its first three‑row battery‑electric SUV for the U.S., assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky with battery modules from its North Carolina plant. The midsize BEV offers up to 320 miles estimated range on certain AWD grades, North American Charging System compatibility and vehicle‑to‑load capability, positioning Toyota to compete in family and fleet EV segments while strengthening domestic supply chains.
