Recon Technology Expands Community Solar Footprint in Illinois
Recon Corporation solidifies its commitment to expanding renewable energy access in Illinois by partnering with Castillo Engineering for two new community solar projects. These initiatives, which will collectively generate 15 MW dc, are set to break ground in the first quarter of 2025, with completion expected by the fourth quarter of the same year. Each project will boast a capacity of 7.5 MW and will utilize advanced single-axis tracking technology to optimize energy production. This collaboration exemplifies Recon's strategic focus on sustainable energy solutions as the state experiences a remarkable surge in community solar capacity, now ranking among the top four states in the U.S.
The selection of Castillo Engineering as the design and engineering partner underscores Recon's reliance on regional expertise to navigate the complexities of solar project development. Scott Walker, President of Recon Corporation, commends Castillo for their proven track record in the Midwest, emphasizing their ability to deliver projects on time and within budget. This partnership builds on a previous collaboration where the two companies successfully secured three projects totaling 23 MW earlier in 2024. Together, they aim to surpass 50 MW of completed solar projects, marking a significant milestone in their joint efforts to enhance solar energy infrastructure in Illinois.
These upcoming projects also represent a strategic response to favorable legislative changes under the Illinois Shines or Adjustable Block Program. The recent increase in the project size limit from 2 MW to 5 MW ac allows for greater economies of scale, thereby promoting the rapid installation of community solar facilities. The projects by Recon and Castillo are the first to leverage this new size allowance, highlighting their proactive approach in adapting to regulatory shifts that facilitate the growth of the renewable energy sector. Christopher Castillo, CEO of Castillo Engineering, expresses enthusiasm for this collaboration, noting the shared vision of enhancing solar energy accessibility in the region.
In addition to the new projects, the community solar landscape in Illinois has expanded significantly, tripling its installed capacity over the past four years. This growth not only reflects the state’s commitment to renewable energy but also positions it strategically in the national landscape, following New York, Minnesota, and Massachusetts. The efforts of Recon and Castillo signify a promising future for solar energy in Illinois, paving the way for more sustainable energy solutions that benefit local communities.
