Rocket Lab Strengthens Hypersonic Capabilities with New Defense Contract
Rocket Lab USA, Inc. has been selected for a significant role in a $1.45 billion Other Transaction Authority (OTA) contract aimed at enhancing the United States’ hypersonic flight test capabilities. This initiative, known as the Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonic Test Bed (MACH-TB) 2.0, is led by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions and established by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. The project is part of the broader National Hypersonic Initiative 2.0, which underscores the U.S. government's commitment to advancing hypersonic technology as a critical component of national defense.
Rocket Lab's involvement in MACH-TB 2.0 includes providing systems engineering, assembly, integration and testing, mission planning, and launch services. The company has previously demonstrated its capabilities by successfully executing hypersonic test launches using its HASTE (Hypersonic Accelerator Suborbital Test Electron) rocket. This suborbital variant of the Electron vehicle is equipped with cutting-edge technologies like carbon fiber composite structures and 3D printed engines, tailored specifically for hypersonic flight tests. With a payload capacity of up to 700 kg, HASTE positions Rocket Lab as a key player in the evolving landscape of hypersonic research and defense.
Brian Rogers, Rocket Lab’s Vice President of Global Launch Services, expresses enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the company’s dedication to hypersonic innovation in partnership with both government and industry stakeholders. Founded in 2006, Rocket Lab has built a robust reputation in the aerospace sector, known for its reliable launch services and advanced space systems. By participating in MACH-TB 2.0, Rocket Lab not only enhances its capabilities but also contributes to the U.S. military's strategic objectives in hypersonic technology.
In addition to its defense initiatives, Rocket Lab is expanding its commercial offerings through its new medium-lift reusable rocket, Neutron. Recently added to NASA's Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare (VADR) contract, Neutron is designed to support a variety of missions, including deploying CubeSats and larger payloads. With a launch capacity of up to 13,000 kg to low Earth orbit, Neutron plays a critical role in Rocket Lab's strategy as a comprehensive space solutions provider, aligning with NASA's goals for advancing scientific and technological payloads.
The company also remains active in engaging with industry stakeholders, participating in several conferences throughout the first quarter of 2025. These events will allow Rocket Lab to showcase its innovations and maintain its position as a leader in the space industry. With its ongoing efforts in hypersonic technology and new launch vehicles, Rocket Lab is well-poised to meet the increasing demands of both government and commercial space sectors.
