Rocket Lab Advances Orbital Manufacturing with Successful W-2 Mission
Rocket Lab USA, Inc. has successfully deployed its second Pioneer spacecraft for Varda Space Industries, Inc., marking a significant step in the realm of orbital manufacturing. The W-2 mission, launched on January 14 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, features a Rocket Lab Pioneer spacecraft alongside a Varda re-entry capsule. This capsule is equipped with a spectrometer from the Air Force Research Laboratory and showcases an advanced heatshield with a Thermal Protection System developed in collaboration with NASA’s Ames Research Center. The mission is designed to enhance Varda’s pharmaceutical reactor capabilities, following the success of the first mission, which operated in orbit for eight months, establishing a precedent for orbital manufacturing beyond the International Space Station.
The W-2 Pioneer spacecraft plays an integral role in the mission, providing essential functions including power, communications, propulsion, and attitude control for Varda's 120kg capsule. After the capsule completes its payload processing in orbit, Rocket Lab’s spacecraft will manage its deorbiting and recovery at the Koonibba Test Range in South Australia.
