TotalEnergies and GSPC Forge Long-Term LNG Supply Agreement to Support India’s Energy Transition
In a landmark development during the India Energy Week in New Delhi, TotalEnergies SE has entered into a significant long-term Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited (GSPC). This ten-year agreement, set to commence in 2026, establishes TotalEnergies as a key supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to GSPC, committing to deliver 400,000 tons of LNG annually, which translates to six cargoes each year. The LNG will be sourced from TotalEnergies' expansive global portfolio and will be delivered to terminals on India's west coast, targeting GSPC's industrial clients and residential consumers, including service stations for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.
Gregory Joffroy, Senior Vice President of LNG at TotalEnergies, expresses strong enthusiasm for this partnership, highlighting the company's leadership in the LNG sector and its strategic role in supporting India's energy transition and security. The collaboration aligns with the growing demand for natural gas in India, where GSPC plays a crucial role as a state-owned entity responsible for meeting one-third of Gujarat's natural gas needs. With a customer base that includes 2.3 million households and 20,000 commercial clients, as well as over 800 CNG stations, GSPC aims to leverage this agreement to secure competitive LNG prices in the long term and enhance operations across the gas value chain.
Milind Torawane, Managing Director at GSPC, underscores the significance of this agreement in addressing the increasing natural gas demand-supply gap within Gujarat and across India. The partnership not only aims to ensure a reliable supply of LNG but also contributes to cleaner energy solutions, ultimately improving air quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. As India continues to transition towards cleaner energy sources, this collaboration between TotalEnergies and GSPC reinforces the pivotal role of natural gas in the country’s energy future, providing a viable alternative for various sectors while supporting the broader goals of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
In addition to the long-term LNG agreement, TotalEnergies showcases its commitment to expanding its presence in the Indian energy market. The company recognizes the growing demand for cleaner energy solutions and is actively exploring various partnerships to enhance its operational capabilities within the region. This strategic move not only positions TotalEnergies as a key player in India's energy landscape but also reinforces its dedication to contributing to the nation's energy security and sustainability goals.
As the energy landscape in India evolves, collaborations like the one between TotalEnergies and GSPC illustrate the importance of natural gas in achieving a balanced and sustainable energy mix, paving the way for a greener future.
