SK Biopharmaceuticals Expands Radiopharmaceutical Portfolio with WT-7695 License Agreement
SK Biopharmaceuticals, a South Korean biotech firm specializing in treatments for central nervous system (CNS) disorders and oncology, solidifies its commitment to radiopharmaceuticals with a significant licensing agreement with the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). This agreement grants SK Biopharmaceuticals exclusive global rights to research, develop, manufacture, and commercialize WT-7695, a preclinical-stage radiopharmaceutical candidate. The acquisition of WT-7695 represents SK Biopharmaceuticals’ second venture into this innovative therapeutic space, following its earlier acquisition of SKL35501 in 2024. This strategic move is a crucial step in the company’s broader initiative to strengthen its position in the burgeoning field of radiopharmaceuticals, which promises new avenues for cancer treatment.
WT-7695 is particularly noteworthy for its targeting of carbonic anhydrase IX (CA9), a protein associated with cancer cell proliferation and metastasis, especially in clear cell renal cell carcinoma and various solid tumors. Preliminary studies indicate that WT-7695 exhibits significant efficacy, positioning it as a promising candidate for advancing radiopharmaceutical therapy. This development is in line with SK Biopharmaceuticals’ strategy of enhancing its research and development capabilities while forming strategic partnerships that complement its goals. By integrating its in-house expertise with external collaborations, the company aims to create a robust pipeline that can effectively address the challenges of cancer treatment.
In addition to the WARF agreement, SK Biopharmaceuticals has formed other strategic alliances, including supply agreements with TerraPower and PanTera for the critical radioisotope Actinium-225 (225Ac). These collaborations enhance the company’s capabilities throughout the radiopharmaceutical value chain—from drug discovery to clinical development. Erik Iverson, CEO of WARF, emphasizes the significance of CA9 as a target in cancer therapy and expresses pride in the partnership aimed at accelerating the development of this promising radiopharmaceutical. Through its multifaceted approach, SK Biopharmaceuticals seeks to improve treatment outcomes for cancer patients worldwide, ultimately establishing itself as a leader in the radiopharmaceutical sector.
As SK Biopharmaceuticals forges ahead with its strategic initiatives, the company is well-positioned to make substantial contributions to the field of oncology. With a clear focus on innovation and collaboration, it aims to enhance patient care through the development of effective radiopharmaceutical therapies. The ongoing commitment to research and partnerships underscores the potential for transformative advancements in cancer treatment, aligning with the company’s mission to address unmet medical needs in oncology.
