Georgia Power Advances Energy Reliability with New Battery Storage Facility
Georgia Power initiates the construction of a 200-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Twiggs County, Georgia, marking a significant step in the company’s strategy to bolster energy reliability as part of its Integrated Resource Plan. This project, approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission on September 4, 2025, is strategically positioned adjacent to the existing Twiggs County Solar facility. By facilitating the rapid dispatch of stored energy for up to four hours, the BESS will enhance the utility's ability to harness renewable energy, particularly solar power, by storing excess energy produced during periods of low demand. This stored energy can then be utilized during high-demand times, particularly during cold winter mornings when solar generation is limited.
Rick Anderson, senior vice president of Georgia Power, emphasizes that the Twiggs BESS is integral to the company's broader commitment to improving grid resilience and supporting the state's energy needs. The facility not only represents a pivotal investment in renewable infrastructure but also aligns with Georgia Power’s goals of ensuring a stable energy supply during peak demand periods. This construction is part of an ambitious plan that includes four additional BESS facilities with a collective capacity of 765 MW, expected to be operational by 2026, alongside proposals for ten more facilities totaling 3,022.5 MW. Such expansions reflect Georgia Power's determination to innovate and enhance its energy mix while addressing the challenges posed by fluctuating energy demand.
The Twiggs County project, constructed by Crowder Industrial Construction, LLC, is anticipated to be completed by 2027. This development underscores Georgia Power's proactive approach to integrating energy storage solutions, which are crucial for accommodating the increasing reliance on renewable energy sources. As the utility sector continues to evolve, initiatives like the Twiggs BESS are vital for adapting to future energy demands and promoting sustainability. Georgia Power's concerted efforts not only aim to enhance energy reliability but also contribute to the state’s long-term energy strategy as it seeks to balance growth with environmental stewardship.
In addition to the Twiggs BESS, Southern Company has a robust history of delivering reliable energy, recently announcing a quarterly dividend of 74 cents per share, reflecting its strong performance and commitment to shareholders. This dividend, payable on December 8, 2025, highlights the company's sustainability and customer-centric approach. With a record of 78 consecutive years of dividend payments, Southern Company continues to prioritize financial stability while striving for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, showcasing its dedication to both economic and environmental progress.
