Tetra Tech's Role in Mt Todd Gold Project Feasibility Study
Vista Gold Corp. launches a feasibility study for its Mt Todd gold project, which is designed to enhance the project’s economic viability and optimize gold production. The study aims to increase the reserve grade to 1 gram of gold per tonne while significantly reducing the initial capital expenditures to $400 million. This revised approach targets an average annual gold output of between 150,000 and 200,000 ounces, utilizing an ore throughput of 5.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). Vista Gold’s President and CEO, Frederick H. Earnest, highlights a notable 60% decrease in initial capital costs through the newly proposed design, which features a throughput rate of 15,000 tonnes per day. Such a strategic pivot not only aims to make Mt Todd more economically attractive but also lays the groundwork for future expansions.
The feasibility study is set to be completed by mid-2025 and includes collaboration with several industry experts. GR Engineering Services (GRES), a prominent Australian mining engineering firm, spearheads the study, focusing on process area designs, cost evaluations, and economic assessments. Tetra Tech, known for its extensive experience in environmental management and engineering services, partners with SLR Consulting to conduct vital water management and environmental studies. Their involvement underscores the importance of sustainable practices in mining, particularly in the context of regulatory compliance and community engagement. The insights provided by Tetra Tech will be critical in ensuring that the Mt Todd project aligns with environmental standards while optimizing resource extraction.
Vista Gold also enlists Mining Plus to assist with mine planning and reserve estimates, further solidifying the project’s technical framework. As they seek a contract mining cost estimate from a leading Australian contractor, the meticulous planning reflects a commitment to establishing Mt Todd as a significant player in the gold development sector. Maria Vallejo, the Director of Projects and Technical Services at Vista, oversees the project’s data verification, ensuring that the feasibility study adheres to industry standards. A technical report summary detailing mineral resources and reserves is expected to be released in March 2024, providing stakeholders with additional insights into the project’s potential.
In addition to Tetra Tech's involvement, Vista Gold’s strategic initiatives signal a broader trend within the mining industry toward cost-effective and environmentally responsible resource development. By focusing on optimizing capital expenditures and operational efficiencies, the Mt Todd project aims to not only enhance its market position but also contribute to sustainable mining practices. As the feasibility study progresses, the collaboration among industry leaders will play a vital role in shaping the future of the Mt Todd gold project.
