Innovations in Tire Technology: Bridgestone and Hankook Lead the Charge
At the recent 2025 Technology & Maintenance Council Annual Meeting, Bridgestone Americas and Hankook Tire unveiled groundbreaking advancements in tire technology, setting new benchmarks for performance and sustainability in the commercial vehicle sector. Bridgestone introduced its R273 Ecopia and Duravis M705 tires, both of which leverage the innovative ENLITEN technology. The R273 Ecopia is specifically crafted for regional trucking, featuring a novel tread compound designed to minimize shoulder wear and enhance mileage. This tire promises improved fuel economy thanks to its low rolling resistance, making it a compelling option for fleet operators looking to reduce operational costs. With its availability in six sizes, including the popular 295/75R22.5, the R273 Ecopia is set to hit the market later this year.
In tandem with the R273, Bridgestone’s Duravis M705 caters to mixed fleets involved in last-mile delivery and pick-up services. This tire marks a significant milestone as the first light and medium-duty tire to incorporate ENLITEN technology. It is engineered with sidewall protectors for durability and retreading efficiency, alongside a specialized tread design that incorporates 3D sipes for improved wear. Notably, the Duravis M705 is also recognized with a Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) designation, indicating its reliability in winter conditions. The tire will be offered in three sizes—215/75R17.5, 225/70R19.5, and 245/70R19.5—expanding the existing options available to fleet managers by the latter half of 2025.
Hankook Tire, also showcasing its advancements at the TMC event, revealed its 5th generation lineup of truck and bus radial (TBR) tires under the Hankook Smart Brand. This new offering emphasizes cutting-edge technologies such as Self-Generated 3D Sipe technology and enhanced tread compounds. Rob Williams, President of Hankook Tire America Corp, underscored the significance of the TMC meeting as a platform for unveiling innovations and outlining the company's growth strategy. A vital component of this strategy is the expansion of Hankook's Tennessee Plant, which is expected to generate approximately 2,200 jobs and significantly increase TBR manufacturing capabilities. The plant's Phase 3 construction is projected to begin by the end of 2025, emphasizing Hankook's commitment to boosting domestic production and solidifying its position in the competitive tire market.
These developments highlight a vigorous push towards innovation and sustainability within the tire industry, showcasing how leading companies like Bridgestone and Hankook are leveraging technology to enhance performance while addressing environmental concerns. As both companies continue to unveil new products that align with modern fleet requirements, they are poised to influence the future landscape of commercial vehicle operations significantly.
