TotalEnergies Expands Natural Gas Portfolio in Malaysia with Strategic Acquisition
TotalEnergies strengthens its position in the Southeast Asian energy market by completing the acquisition of a 50% interest in SapuraOMV Upstream from OMV and Sapura Energy. This acquisition enhances TotalEnergies' portfolio with substantial assets in Malaysia, particularly offshore Sarawak, where it gains a 40% operated interest in block SK408 and a 30% operated interest in block SK310. These blocks are vital for the company’s operational strategy, as they are expected to contribute significantly to its natural gas production, slated to reach approximately 590 million cubic feet per day (Mcf/d) in 2024, along with an additional output of 10,000 barrels per day (kb/d) of condensates. This production primarily supports the Bintulu LNG plant, operated by Petronas, underlining TotalEnergies’ commitment to meeting regional energy demands.
The acquisition aligns with TotalEnergies’ broader strategy of integrating sustainable practices within its operations. The company reports that the production costs from the newly acquired assets are below $5 per barrel of oil equivalent (boe), coupled with an impressive emission intensity of less than 10 kg CO2e/boe. This emphasizes TotalEnergies' focus on not only boosting its production capacities but also on reducing its environmental footprint. Given the increasing global emphasis on sustainability, this strategic move positions TotalEnergies favorably within the energy sector, as it seeks to balance economic growth with ecological responsibility.
TotalEnergies has a long-standing presence in Malaysia, having started operations in 1985. The company collaborates closely with Petronas and employs around 300 staff in the country. Following this acquisition, TotalEnergies enhances its operational interests in Malaysia, which also include substantial stakes in various offshore blocks, such as 34.9% in blocks SB-2K and SB-N, and 85% in block DW2E. Furthermore, the company is involved in a CO2 storage development project in partnership with Petronas and Mitsui, underscoring its dedication to sustainable energy solutions in the region.
