Toyota unveils U.S.-built three-row Highlander battery EV

Toyota Motor unveils the all-new 2027 Highlander, a reimagined three-row battery-electric SUV that the company says brings striking style, elevated comfort and practical versatility to U.S. buyers. Announced in Ojai, California on Feb. 10, the model is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky and marks Toyota’s fourth battery-electric vehicle in the U.S. lineup and its first three-row BEV for the market. Battery modules are assembled at the newly opened Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina plant and at a partner supplier in the United States.

The midsize SUV seats up to seven and offers more than 45 cubic feet of rear storage with the third row folded flat, along with a tech-forward cabin that includes a 14-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver display. Two grades — XLE and Limited — are available with front- or all-wheel drive; XLE AWD and Limited AWD equipped with a 95.8-kWh battery carry a manufacturer-estimated total driving range rating of 320 miles. Toyota rates the Highlander at up to 338 combined system horsepower and 323 lb.-ft. of torque, and the vehicle includes North American Charging System (NACS) compatibility and vehicle-to-load capability for powering external devices or serving as emergency backup power when bi-directional accessories are fitted.

Toyota frames the Highlander as a high-tech, practical entrant in the crowded midsize SUV segment, emphasizing integrated connectivity, over-the-air software updates and the latest Toyota Safety Sense driver-assistance systems. Features such as flush door handles, full-length LED daytime running lights and customizable ambient lighting underscore the design focus. The company highlights U.S.-based battery assembly and partner sourcing as a strategy to strengthen domestic EV supply chains, lower ownership costs and support local manufacturing jobs, positioning the Highlander for families and fleet buyers seeking a three-row electric option.

Olympic athletes face public scrutiny over political remarks

The vehicle announcement comes as U.S. athletes competing at the Milano Cortina Winter Games draw renewed scrutiny for public comments on political issues. Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason tells listeners on WFAN and in Fox News coverage that American Olympians "should just pipe down" and focus on representing the flag, comments that follow athletes expressing mixed feelings about competing for Team USA.

Vice President J.D. Vance adds to the debate, telling reporters in Baku that athletes should seek unity rather than division while representing the United States. Vance acknowledges athletes may "pop off about politics" but warns those who do should expect pushback, framing the controversy as part of a broader national conversation about free expression and national representation at international sporting events.
