GreenFirst Forest Products Strengthens Financial Position with Strategic Sale of Duty Refunds

GreenFirst Forest Products Inc. has entered a significant agreement with Mahogany Investors, LLC, selling its entitlements to refunds related to duties imposed on softwood lumber exported from Canada to the U.S. during 2021 and 2022. Valued at approximately $17.5 million USD, this transaction not only provides immediate liquidity but also holds the potential for additional proceeds depending on the outcome of an ongoing trade dispute. CEO Joel Fournier underscores that this agreement is pivotal for reinforcing the company's financial stability while allowing a concentrated focus on its core operations.

The funds generated from this sale, combined with a recent rights offering, are earmarked to facilitate the first phase of GreenFirst's strategic expenditure plan. This plan aims to position the company as the largest sawyer in Ontario and a top quartile lumber producer. Central to this initiative are the duties involving deposits totaling around $60 million USD, which were made during GreenFirst's ownership of six softwood lumber mills in Ontario and Quebec. Although the Quebec assets were divested in 2023, GreenFirst retains rights associated with these duty deposits, ensuring its entitlement to any possible refunds.

In addition to financial maneuvers, GreenFirst is committed to sustainable forest management practices. The company operates four sawmills across FSC®-certified public forestlands spanning over 6.1 million hectares in Ontario. This commitment to responsible forestry is aimed at capitalizing on the long-term benefits of lumber, positioning GreenFirst favorably for both cyclical and secular growth within the building products market. The strategic sale and the company’s focus on sustainability reflect an ongoing effort to optimize its asset portfolio while enhancing its competitive edge.

As GreenFirst navigates the complexities of the lumber industry, this strategic agreement and the accompanying liquidity improvements signal a robust approach to managing financial risks and operational growth. The company is poised to leverage its commitments to sustainable practices, which may further bolster its market standing in a competitive landscape.
