TL;DR
  • United orders 300 GEnx engines, bringing its GEnx-equipped 787 fleet to over 200 aircraft and becoming largest GEnx operator.
  • A larger common GEnx fleet and spares reduce AOG risk, simplify maintenance, and improve availability on long‑haul 787 routes.
  • Deal fits United’s mixed GE‑ and CFM‑powered fleet strategy, supporting long‑term capacity and reliability for international routes.

United doubles down on GEnx to power its 787 fleet

United Airlines Holdings selects 300 GEnx engines from GE Aerospace to power its incoming Boeing 787 Dreamliners, a deal that includes additional spare units and brings United’s GEnx-equipped 787 fleet to more than 200 aircraft. GE Aerospace says the order makes United the largest operator of GEnx engines in the world, underscoring a long-standing commercial relationship between the two companies that began in 1968. Mohamed Ali, president and CEO of GE Aerospace Commercial Engines & Services, says GE is "honored" that United continues to choose its engines to support growth across multiple aircraft types.

Operationally, the GEnx family is pitched as delivering greater durability and longer time on wing, with GE citing a 99.98 percent dispatch reliability rate that supports airline schedule integrity. For United, a larger common GEnx fleet and added spares reduce the risk of aircraft-on-ground events and simplify maintenance planning across long-haul 787 routes. The engines’ advanced materials and technologies also aim to lower maintenance costs and improve aircraft availability as United grows and refreshes its widebody network.

The deal also fits into United’s broader fleet strategy of mixed GE- and CFM-powered aircraft, providing continuity of support and aftermarket services from an established supplier. GE says the latest order raises its firm future deliveries of GEnx engines and spares to nearly 1,800 units, a commitment that aligns with United’s long-term capacity and reliability needs on international and transcontinental services. The order emphasizes fleet commonality benefits that airlines pursue when scaling long-haul operations with modern twin-engine widebodies.

GE Aerospace scale and aftermarket breadth

GE Aerospace highlights an installed base of roughly 50,000 commercial and 30,000 military engines and a global workforce around 57,000, noting extensive aftermarket programmes, service networks and support offerings that accompany committed engine volumes. The company frames the GEnx order as part of its broader innovation and safety remit, with online resources detailing support and lifecycle services.

Engine family reach and industry context

GE notes the GEnx now powers about two-thirds of all Boeing 787s in service and exclusively powers the 747‑8, having logged more than 70 million flight hours. It also points to the CFM joint venture with Safran — and the presence of CF6, GE90, CFM56‑7B, LEAP and CF34 engines across United’s fleet — underscoring how engine selection ties into airline network planning and maintenance ecosystems.
