Verizon adds 35-day lock on devices paid off through non-secure channels
Verizon Communications is introducing a 35-day waiting period for unlocking fully paid-off devices when customers clear remaining balances through non-secure channels. The delay applies to payoffs made online or via the My Verizon app, purchases funded with Verizon Gift Cards, and payments taken by phone, at authorized retailers or by other methods Verizon classifies as non-secure. The carrier says the measure aims to reduce fraud.
The policy keeps an automatic unlock for postpaid customers who complete installment agreements through scheduled monthly payments, which continue to trigger an unlock after the final installment. Verizon also says customers who pay off a device in person at a Verizon corporate store using secure methods — cash, an EMV chip-enabled credit card, or contactless options such as Apple Pay or Google Pay — often receive a faster unlock, usually within 24 hours. A Verizon spokesperson tells Ars Technica the 35-day window exists for fraud prevention and that qualifying customers generally get expedited service.
The change follows a Federal Communications Commission action that removes Verizon’s longstanding automatic unlock requirement of 60 days after activation. Consumer groups and industry observers warn the new policy could complicate international travel for customers who plan to swap in local SIMs, slow immediate resale of paid-off phones and impede seamless carrier switching unless customers can access corporate stores. Verizon advises customers who plan to travel or sell devices to confirm unlock timelines in advance or use in-store secure payment options to avoid the delay. For prepaid devices, Verizon maintains a separate rule keeping phones locked for 365 days of paid, active service, after which it says it will automatically remove the lock unless other conditions apply.
Victra celebrates three decades as Verizon’s largest authorized retailer
Victra, the nation’s largest authorized Verizon retailer, is marking its 30th anniversary in 2026 after growing from a single campus store into more than 1,800 locations across all 50 states. The company says it employs about 7,000 people, operates an estimated 2.6 million square feet of retail space and generates roughly $3 billion in annual revenue, attributes it credits to a longstanding partnership with Verizon and investments in omnichannel retail, training and community outreach.
Victra frames its expansion as aligned with broader industry shifts — from pagers and early handsets to nationwide 5G, connected-home services and AI-enabled features — and emphasizes ongoing store modernization, franchise and corporate store models, and philanthropy as central to future growth. The retailer’s scale underscores the role of large third-party sellers in Verizon’s physical distribution and customer service network.
