HERNDON SHOWCASE PUTS SATELLITE BACKHAUL AT THE CENTER OF EVENT SAFETY
HERNDON, Va., Feb 3, 2026 — Verizon Frontline and ST Engineering iDirect are demonstrating a suite of satellite-enabled deployable communications at a Bay Area event for public safety officials the week ahead of the Super Bowl. The collaboration spotlights how integrated satellite and terrestrial architectures provide redundant backhaul and mission continuity for large events and emergency response. Verizon Frontline, described as the advanced network and solutions built for first responders, is hosting asset tours, live technology demonstrations and a recognition ceremony for agencies from the next two Super Bowl host cities.
The demonstrations emphasize real-time situational monitoring, on-demand capacity and a unified command center that aggregates live video and audio feeds to speed decision-making. Featured deployables include the Tactical Humanitarian Operations Response (THOR) vehicle — equipped with private 5G Ultra‑Wideband, mobile edge compute and multiple backhaul options — and the Satellite Picocell on Trailer (SPOT), a mobile unit that supports up to 400 users with satellite backhaul and Wi‑Fi. Verizon integrates ST Engineering iDirect’s satellite terminals to maintain resilient connectivity when terrestrial links are saturated or degraded.
Verizon and ST Engineering iDirect frame the exercise as practical preparedness rather than a product demo. Stuart Burson, Verizon’s Director of Satellite Solutions, says the integrated systems deliver reliable, resilient connectivity first responders can depend on and are transforming public safety communications. Darren Ludington of ST Engineering iDirect adds that the partner is honored to supply high‑performance satellite communications for mission‑critical operations. Organizers run live operational scenarios designed to show how scalable communications tools improve coordination, situational awareness and responder safety during major events and emergencies.
HANDS-ON BRIEFINGS SHAPE PROCUREMENT
Attendees receive hands-on experience with the deployables and participate in briefings and vendor Q&A to inform procurement and planning decisions. The sessions aim to help agencies of different sizes evaluate how satellite-augmented networks can plug into existing command-and-control frameworks and be fielded rapidly for high-consequence events.
OPERATIONAL RESILIENCE AND PLANNING IMPLICATIONS
The demonstration underscores a broader industry push to blend private cellular, edge computing and satellite links to create multi‑layered, resilient networks for public safety. Agencies reviewing the exercises are assessing not only technical fit but operational procedures, training needs and logistics for staging assets at crowded venues.
