VIAVI Solutions Enhances Cellular Network Resilience Against GNSS Interference

VIAVI Solutions Inc. is making significant strides in bolstering the resilience of cellular networks through a new contract awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Under the Complementary Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (CPNT) Action Plan Rapid Phase II, VIAVI is tasked with enhancing cellular networks' ability to withstand GPS and GNSS signal interference, such as jamming and spoofing. This initiative is particularly crucial in an era where accurate positioning and timing are vital for essential infrastructure, including data centers, financial systems, power grids, and cellular networks.

The integration and testing of VIAVI’s state-of-the-art solutions will take place at the company’s Automated Lab-as-a-Service for Open RAN (VALOR™) and the Open RAN Center for Integration and Deployment (ORCID) labs. These facilities are funded through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (PWSCIF). In this context, VIAVI will employ its innovative SecureTimeSM altGNSS GEO-L service alongside the SecurePNT™ 6200 resilient timing solution, which provides a GPS-independent alternative during interference events. By leveraging these technologies, VIAVI aims to ensure uninterrupted service and precise timing, even in challenging conditions.

Doug Russell, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Aerospace and Defense at VIAVI, has expressed the company's enthusiasm for contributing to the CPNT Action Plan. He emphasizes the preparedness of their technology for operational environments, highlighting that the data collected from the VALOR and ORCID labs, as well as insights from field trials, will pave the way for broader adoption of CPNT services. Moreover, alongside lab evaluations, VIAVI’s GEO-L service will participate in a government field test event specifically designed to simulate real-world jamming and spoofing scenarios, further solidifying the efficacy of their solutions in protecting critical infrastructure nationwide.
