San Francisco tie-up brings home batteries into utility orchestration

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 11 (Reuters) — WeaveGrid and SolarEdge Technologies announce a partnership that folds residential battery systems into utility grid programs through WeaveGrid’s Distribution-Integrated System Capacity Orchestration (DISCO) platform. The move extends DISCO beyond its original electric-vehicle focus to create an asset-level orchestration layer that lets utilities coordinate a wider range of behind-the-meter flexible resources. WeaveGrid co-founder and CEO Apoorv Bhargava says the integration is necessary “as electrification accelerates,” stressing the need to manage multiple asset types together to meet local and system-wide grid needs.

DISCO now incorporates bulk system value from residential batteries to enable utilities to integrate home storage into virtual power plants and other grid services, subject to individual utility offerings and customer enrollment. SolarEdge, which describes itself as the top provider of U.S. residential solar solutions, says it already has more than 500 megawatt-hours of storage participating in grid services and serves as a foundational battery OEM partner. Tamara Sinensky, senior manager for Grid Services Product at SolarEdge, says the collaboration gives battery owners further access to utility programs and puts “more control and value into homeowners’ hands.”

The partnership targets easier program enrollment, streamlined telemetry and measurement-and-verification workflows for utilities and original equipment manufacturers, while preserving customer privacy and choice. DISCO’s orchestration capability supports both local congestion management on distribution feeders and larger bulk capacity needs on the system, positioning the platform as a central utility tool for aligning customer energy use with distribution-level constraints. WeaveGrid and SolarEdge say the capability is designed to scale quickly as distributed energy resource adoption rises.

OEM ecosystem and homeowner incentives

WeaveGrid emphasizes that the deal builds on an expanding OEM ecosystem, with SolarEdge’s installed base helping jump-start battery participation in grid services. Homeowners can expect options to optimize when their batteries charge and discharge and to earn financial incentives for supporting grid stability, depending on utility program designs.

Operational features and utility integration

Technically, DISCO continues to manage EV charging at scale while adding residential storage controls, offering unified telemetry and M&V to simplify utility operations. The partners say the integration supports rapid deployment across utilities that seek flexible, customer-friendly ways to tap distributed storage for resilience and capacity needs.
