Western Midstream Partners Launches Second Water Treatment Facility to Combat Texas Water Scarcity

Western Midstream Partners LP (WES) announces the launch of its second produced-water treatment pilot facility in the Permian Basin, demonstrating a significant step in addressing water scarcity in Texas.

Innovative Water Treatment Solutions

Known as JIP 2, this facility near Red Bluff Reservoir aims to process 2,000 barrels of produced water daily and generate around 1,000 barrels of reclaimed freshwater each day. This output marks a tenfold increase compared to its predecessor, JIP 1, which laid the foundation for assessing various water treatment technologies and gathered over 50,000 water quality data points. These insights set the stage for potential future commercial-scale desalination facilities and highlight Western Midstream's commitment to sustainable water management solutions.

CEO Oscar K. Brown underscores the transformative impact of this initiative, stating that it converts produced water from a disposal challenge into a valuable resource.
