Sabre deepens technology role as WestJet renews core passenger system
Sabre is extending a multi‑year agreement with WestJet that keeps the carrier on SabreSonic as its primary passenger service system, reinforcing Sabre’s role in powering reservations, ticketing, check‑in and ancillary sales. The renewal keeps WestJet’s content flowing through the SabreMosaic Travel Marketplace and gives the airline continued access to Sabre’s operational support while it considers a phased move to cloud‑native retailing. Sabre frames the deal as both an immediate operational commitment and a platform for future retailing modernization.
The pact explicitly positions WestJet to assess and potentially adopt Sabre’s modular SabreMosaic Airline Retailing platform and next‑generation Offer and Order technologies as the carrier evolves its commercial model. Sabre’s Darren Rickey, the company’s SVP of Airline IT Sales and Services, describes the renewal as a vote of confidence in Sabre’s roadmap at a time when the industry shifts from traditional fare‑based distribution to flexible offer and order frameworks. The agreement is effective immediately, enabling continuity for peak seasonal planning and ongoing IT transition work.
WestJet says the long‑standing relationship supports its strategic growth ambitions as it expands globally. Tanya Foster, WestJet’s Group EVP and CIO, points to more than 25 years of partnership with Sabre and cites the vendor’s “proven technology, strong support and forward‑looking strategy” as enablers for unlocking future growth. For Sabre, the deal demonstrates continued demand from legacy carriers seeking both stability in core reservation systems and a pathway to newer, cloud‑native retailing capabilities.
Sabre, headquartered in Southlake, Texas, serves customers in more than 160 countries and markets its solutions to airlines, hoteliers and agencies that require scale and integration across distribution and fulfillment. The company is emphasizing modular, cloud‑native offerings to meet airline needs for faster innovation and more granular merchandising control.
WestJet, which began operations in 1996 with just over 200 employees and three aircraft, now flies to more than 100 destinations across North and South America, Europe and Asia. The airline frames the renewal as part of broader IT and commercial initiatives designed to support international growth while maintaining reliable passenger‑facing operations.
