Wilkes County Schools Leads the Charge in Sustainable Student Transportation

Wilkes County Schools (WCS) marks a pivotal moment in educational transportation by becoming the first school district in Georgia to operate all of its daily bus routes with zero- and ultra-low-emission vehicles, facilitated by a partnership with Blue Bird Corporation. The district's innovative fleet includes five fully electric buses that can transport approximately 60 students for up to 130 miles on a single charge and 12 propane-powered buses with a range of 250 miles on a single tank of propane autogas. This strategic shift away from diesel buses not only enhances air quality for students and the surrounding community but also significantly reduces operating costs.

The financial advantages of this transition are substantial. WCS reports energy costs of just 19 cents per mile for electric buses, a dramatic decrease compared to the 79 cents per mile associated with diesel. Furthermore, the propane buses boast an impressive reduction in emissions, generating 96% fewer harmful pollutants than their diesel counterparts. This eco-friendly approach allows the school district to save up to $3,700 per bus annually in total ownership costs, which translates to over $1.2 million in savings over the lifespan of its current fleet of 22 Blue Bird propane buses. In addition to the buses, Highland Electric Fleets has installed five Tellus charging stations to support the electric vehicles, ensuring that the infrastructure is in place for ongoing sustainable operation.
